You don’t have to be a serious angler to enjoy an afternoon on the St. Lucie River — but if you are, you’re in for a treat. The river’s mix of freshwater and brackish water, plus its direct run out to the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic, means the species list changes with the season and the tide.
What’s biting, and when
- Snook and redfish — best around the mangrove edges and residential canals, especially early morning
- Bluefish and Spanish mackerel — more common near the inlet during the autumn mullet run
- Largemouth bass and bream — further upriver in the freshwater stretches
Where to launch
The Veterans Memorial Parkway ramp is the closest option if you’re staying near Lullaby Terrace or Bordeaux Ct, while the newer, larger C24 Canal boat ramp suits guests near Kern Rd well. Both give you direct access without the drive out to the coast.
No boat? The riverbanks near the Botanical Gardens and the new Pioneer Park in the Port District both have good bank-fishing access, and a Florida fishing license (easy to buy online) covers you for either.
Whichever spot you choose, bring sun protection and plenty of water — Florida sun on open water is stronger than it looks. And if you land something worth telling us about, we always love hearing how the trip went.
